2008-09-12Essen 2008 – new games from CGE

Spiel'08For this autumn we are preparing tree news: Galaxy Trucker – The Big Expansion, League of Six – Loyal Retinue and Space Alert.

Galaxy Trucker - The Big Expansion

The first new game for this autumn is previously announced expansion for award winning Galaxy Trucker – The Big Expansion. In fact, it is a couple of smaller expansions that add more destruction, interaction, challenge and fun. On top of that, components for the 5th player are included.

One part of the expansion is enhanced version of previously released downloadable expansion Rough Road. Contest winning card ideas from players are presented every Saturday at Boardgamenews.com.

League of Six - Loyal Retinue

The next is League of Six expansion – Loyal Retinue. Beside the 6th player components and rules the game has brand new aspect presented: when visiting towns, the players get supporters from various social classes and build a retinue. These loyals help players during the game or the final scoring.

It’s simple and elegant mechanism that adds a lot of strategic options, as is usual in Vladimir Suchy’s games.

Space Alert

The last but not least is Vlaada Chvátil’s new unique cooperative “team survival game” – Space Alert. Players become crewmembers of a small spaceship scanning dangerous sectors of galaxy. The missions last approximately 10 minutes (hyperspace jump, sector scan, hyperspace jump back) and the only task the players have is to protect their ship.

And there’s the catch. The game really lasts just 10 minutes. On 2 CDs (or Scenario cards if you don’t have a CD player available) are 10-minute soundtracks that represent central computer announcements about the presence of threats. These vary from space battleships and interceptors to different interstellar monsters and abominations, asteroids or even intruders and malfunctions on the board of the ship. Players have to agree who will take care of which task and coordinate their actions (moving around the ship, firing weapons, distributing energy, using battlebots to deal with intruders, launching guided missiles etc.) in real time to defend the ship. Only a well working team can survive 10 minutes and make the jump back to the safety.

The game offers several difficulty levels, huge variability and unique experience for two to five player teams. One mission lasts only about 30 minutes, including setup and evaluation.
